It all begins with an idea…
Commissions
Thank you for your interest in creating a custom drawing with me!
This is a short guide to give you an idea about how the process works.
Size
The first step is to decide on the size of your commissions. Consider the space where you are planning on hanging the drawing, and if you know which design of fabric you’d like, take into consider how busy the pattern will be, and if you would like it to fill the entire panel or have some negative space. I’m more than happy to make recommendations.
Inspiration
It’s always helpful for me to see photos of your space, fabric or the pattern you have in mind. You can also take a look through my portfolio of work to see previous work and the endless possibilities for your custom piece. Are you interested in knots, piled fabrics, or draped fabrics? These are all things to consider for your customized drawing. Follow your gut and your initial attraction to a certain colour, pattern, or forms, and go with that!
Subjects
There is something special about capturing fabrics in an art form. Typically, our garments or fabrics sit still, hanging behind doors, or folded in drawers. Drawing these forms capture their details in a unique way that can be displayed on the walls of your home. I love to draw detailed garments and fabrics with interesting patterns and designs, family heirloom scarves or special occasion garments, such as dresses or lingerie.
Preliminary Plans
I start my projects by taking many photographs of the chosen fabric, and manipulate the fabric into different forms according to your specifications (knotted, draped, piled, etc). I will send you 3-4 photo options which will give you an idea of the form. Once you choose your favourite image, I move into the drawing stage.
Timing
Given the highly detailed nature of my realistic style, the pattern of the fabric or garment, and the size of the drawing, affects the timeframe for completion. I create my drawings by using multiple layers of coloured pencil, with a spray of UV archival fixative after each layer, so this process takes some time. I only take on a limited number of commissions, so from start to finish, depends on my current availability. Generally, my drawings take between 4-6 weeks to complete.
Next Steps
If you’re ready to move forward with your commissioned drawing, the next step is to schedule a phone call to discuss the details of your piece. Alternatively, we can also chat by email. Then I can provide a cost estimate, and send you the contract to review and sign.
